What Is the Student Assistance Program?

The Student Assistance Program (SAP) provides services and supports to students who are struggling in school. The team works in collaboration with the student and the family to remove barriers to learning and success. In addition, the program offers prevention and intervention services. Using a holistic approach, SAP promotes healthy life styles and drug-free behaviors for youth.

A student may be referred to the Student Assistance Program for any reason. These reasons include changes in appearance, drop in grades, disciplinary problems, or other situations that might lead to a lack of academic success. Additionally, a student may be referred to the program because of an addiction.

The program is coordinated by a Student Assistance Program Specialist. This team is trained to identify and address issues affecting the academic, emotional, and social growth of youth. They also work with parents and the student to develop a personalized plan to address the needs of the student. Whether the situation is mental health or substance abuse related, the team works to remove barriers to learning.

The Student Assistance Team is made up of trained professionals, including counselors, nurses, and guidance counselors. Their role is to identify students who need assistance and to link them to the appropriate community and school-based resources. All of the members of the team are trained to understand the sensitive nature of information they collect and are required to adhere to state and federal laws.
